Deer In the Headlights

Jeremy Monteiro, Ernie Watts, Randy Brecker, Richard Jackson, The T'ang Quartet & all were real good. They all do their thing darn well. I think they played a few tunes which happened to coincide with how I have been feeling recently, or maybe they influenced it with their powerful music.

They played one called the bubula dance, which is supposed to emote a heart fluttering in love, and another, which I could not remember the title of that was supposed to be about going from the loss of something to acceptance (Life goes on?). The not so emotionally involved tune that I liked most was called funk (some skunk funk according to the booklet). But actually, I liked all lah.

I kind like that really big cello thingy that produced all the low bassy sounds (Acoustic Double Bass according to the booklet), and I also think that a trumpet and saxophone sound roughly the same.

I also came to appreciate the drummer, as he knew where his sounds fit in the song, and unlike a lot of hardcore-punk-ass-whatever whose drums always dominate the whole bloody barely-a-song. In future, I think I'll take note whenever I hear about a Jazz show in town. Maybe I ought to learn a few things about music too so that I'm not so dependant on the booklet.

My main objective to enjoy the show was completed. Great virgin experience of going for a Jazz show, and entering the esplanade concert hall (which has real cool architecture by the way).
I think this is one rare good decision that I made.

My side objective was not fulfilled. There was someone I wanted to talk to. We made eye contact for a moment during the seating, and when it was made, I think it was because I was caught like a deer in the headlights, and it took a moment to register that person's presence. Also, I didn't smile or curl up the sides of my mouth, my face was stuck in neutral gear. I guess you might call that 'kena dian' (as in electricity).

Still, I am thankful to have seen & heard.
