Ten Thousand Hours

There's this book that I've been wanting to read, it's called Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. Despite having not read it yet, I've heard that one of the major points is that it takes 10000 hours to become expertly skilled in... most skills.

I guess it's a ball park figure, but then 10000 hours should be enough for a person to become adept at the various permutations and combinations of that skill. So maybe it requires more for some skills, and less for others.

So after hearing of this magic 10000 hours, I decided that I'd spend more time practicing the ashihara style, and maybe swimming.

But after a while it occurred to me that while I'd be able to grasp some expertise in one particular skill over the next decade or two with consistency and intent to improve, parents of young children are in a much better position to help their kids become highly skilled.

Of course there are other factors like availability and cost of being taught the skill. (meaning that your kid is a lot less likely to become a master of the vuvuzela while living in the north pole)

Maybe I should make a guide with sample timetables so that the next generation will be trained up to become a generation of very skillful people. In the meantime, hopefully someone writes another book about how to infuse passion...
